How knowledgeable are you about your home’s plumbing? What kind of skills do you possess? If answering these questions was difficult or you found your answers unsatisfactory, look at the tips below.
You need to know your plumbing tools as well as how they are used so your plumbing efforts are always positive. Read every manual, and use the Internet and library to research the projects that you plan on doing. Don’t just blindly rush into a project. Plan each project so that you don’t make costly mistakes.
To prevent pipes from freezing, maintain a constant temperature in your home above freezing, and insulate external pipes. Pipes have the potential to freeze as soon as they reach freezing mark. It may take some time to thaw so that you can have running water. However, frozen pipes often burst, which would cause a huge mess and an extremely big repair bill.
Septic Tank
In order to ensure that your garbage disposal will last for as long as your home, keep it clean on a regular basis. You can use dish soap, lemon peels, and cherry pits to get your garbage disposal clean and fresh and running well.
Pump out your septic tank at least every five years to keep it working well. Although it is somewhat of an expense to pump out a septic tank, it will cost a lot more having to clean sewage backup or having to fix or replace a septic tank.
Knowing what tools and the proper way to use them will make you much better at plumbing. Before undertaking repairs on your own, plan ahead, a mistake could make repairs even more costly.
Keep your bathtub drain running well by pouring a cup of baking soda followed by a cup of vinegar down the drain each month. The combination will cause a chemical reaction, so just place a cloth or other object over the drain after pouring. After waiting a few minutes, flush the drain with boiling water. By taking these steps, you have a good chance of ridding your pipes of hair and soap scum.
If your toilet gets clogged, there is a low level of water in toilet, and your water level inside of the toilet appears low, you can sometimes fix the problem by dumping warm water into your toilet at waist level (or maybe even a little higher). Repeat this once your water returns back to a lower level.
Use filters on all drains to prevent debris that might clog the pipes from sliding down your drain and causing clogs. The ones in the bathroom can be cleaned out on a regular basis.
Be sure to clean your dryer’s lint trap. This not only prevents fires, but saves money. Inspect your lint trap often to see if there are any tears or holes. If there are, you can have lint getting into your pipes, and this will clog them and give you more problems that will have to be dealt with.
Don’t pour cooking grease, grease or fat into your drain. This is especially the case if you possess a garbage disposal run slower. Make certain you dispose of all oils away from the sink.
If your house uses well water and there are orange or pink stains in tubs or sinks, then you can be sure that the culprit is iron in your water. You will need a water softener in order to take care of this problem, which is something you can get on your own at a local retailer, or hire someone to go to your home and fix it for you.
If you have grout caught in your line, it’s most likely impossible for you to clean yourself. You can try dislodging some of the blockage which will open up the line. It works better if you have plastic pipes instead of metal pipes. However, this will most likely require a professional to do the job.
By regularly “cleaning” the disposal with lemon rinds, cherry pits and citrus rinds, you can make sure that your garbage disposal is running well and smelling so clean it could be new.
Overflow Holes
When you have to take out the clean out plug, but it is not coming out, you can remove it using one of two ways. The first one is to use a hammer and chisel to attempt loosening the fitting. The only other thing you can do is chisel through it.
Check your fixtures to ensure the overflow holes regularly to prevent blockage. Clear the overflow holes when you are doing your periodic checks for problems and plumbing issues that should be addressed.
If you notice water draining into your dishwasher, most likely this is due to a faulty setup of the hose that leads from the kitchen sink. The hose from your sink to your dishwasher has to go upward before going back down so that there is no mixing between fixtures.
Make sure your toilet is not leaking. An excellent method of checking this is by dropping a few food coloring drops in the tank of the toilet. If colored water appears in your bowl soon after you put food coloring in the tank, your toilet is leaking. Fix leaks as soon as possible after you discover them.
Don’t flush anything that is unlikely to dissolve and wind up clogging pipes, such as diapers, diapers or cotton balls, because these items don’t break down and may cause clogging issues.
